EPISODE 2
Hello everyone. And welcome to Inspirations from Brighton, episode number two. I’m your host, Klara Markovicova, and joining me today to talk about the fantastic cleaning business in Brighton and how the life circumstances turn around her life and made her stronger is Kamila Tobiasova.
Kamila is from the Czech Republic. She is originally from a small town from which she decided to follow her dreams in Brighton. In the Czech Republic, she studied chemistry and ecology, where she developed her interest for taxidermy. Decision for her moving to Brighton came in 2007, because she wanted to explore the world and enter into the new chapter of her life.
Kamila loves travelling, meeting new interesting people, and her passion was always helping people to improve their homes with perfect attention to detail. Therefore, she runs her small cleaning business based in Brighton and it’s called Kami Cleaners. Kamila is a mum of a three years old boy and she enjoys her role very much. Let’s dive straight into our conversation.
Klara: Hello and welcome to Inspirations from Brighton. How are you today?
Kamila: Hello, I’m fine, thank you.
Klara: We are happy to have you here to join our podcast today.
Kamila: Oh, thank you.
Klara: So, Kami, would you like to share something about your background and who you are with our listeners? I know that lots of people know about you here in Brighton and Hove especially, but maybe we will have a new listeners soon. So, if you would like to introduce yourself.
Kamila: So I would like to say I am Kamila, I am from the Czech Republic and I’m living in Brighton, Hove actually. Yes, 17 years, over the 17 years. And I came here to visit my ex-partner who was here and I came here just to meet him. Plan was for one week and it’s 17 years now.
Klara: Wow. So you stayed for a long time. What made you come here to live in England?
Kamila: When I came here, my best friend at that time, she used to work for a company, a cleaning company and she asked me to help her with some jobs. So, I came for holiday here to visit her and that time help her with some jobs and I stayed longer and longer.
Klara: But did you speak English at the beginning?
Kamila: Oh, no. No, I didn’t. I knew just three words. Not good words, and no, no English.
Klara: How did you manage to speak with people?
Kamila: Just smile.
Klara: Okay. Wow! Was it difficult for you?
Kamila: Yes. It was. Many situation were really difficult, but I manage it somehow. I met really good people as well, so that helps.
Klara: How did you actually start learning English? Did you buy a book?
Kamila: At the beginning, it was just listening and loads of listening. Pub visits and talking with people. Then, after a few years, I had English course, evening English course. I’m not sure if it helped me a lot, but it was nice to meet new people and then communicate with them later after English course. And lots of my clients helped me to speak as well.
Klara: You said you’ve been here for 17 years. That’s really long time. Have you ever thought about coming back to Czech Republic?
Kamila: At the beginning, maybe first few years, I was thinking, yes, I would come back, but not anymore. I have a lovely partner, and nice life here now.
Klara: That’s great. And you’ve been also traveling a lot. You’ve travelled the world, let’s say.
Kamila: Yes, yes. That time I really loved travelling and I tried to visit nice places. With group of friends or alone. That was nice.
Klara: What was your most favourite country you visited?
Kamila: I think my favourite country is still Iceland. I really love it. I love it. Yeah, it’s beautiful. But, you know, then Tanzania, when you see all animals, it’s beautiful as well. Loads of places. I think every place is a nice place.
Klara: Do you have any holiday planned or any country you want to visit next?
Kamila: My biggest, dream is to see Madagascar. But I’m not sure how it will be, but yeah, I would like to see everything.
Klara: That sounds like a good plan. You’ve been working hard over the years, then you slowly developed your company Kami Cleaners. Would you share with us how it all started? And why Kami Cleaners?
Kamila: I used to clean on my own. I slowly had more and more clients and I started to have helpers because it was too much for me. And Kami Cleaners because I am Kamila, Kami Cleaners. It just happened. I think what helped me to have a business was…. six years ago came, change into my life and I was diagnosed with an illness and that showed me like to slow down and have a company rather than run on my own. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It was shock in my life, but it showed me how to slow down and enjoy more, more stuff.
Klara: I really admire how you managed to combine your professional, work life, personal life, and family life, because you’ve got amazing son, amazing partner…
Kamila: Thank you. Thank you. Yes, I, I have a three-year-old son. His name is Elvin and he is really good. My partner is really good. Business going well because I finally build up a nice team of people and I have nice clients as well. Sometimes it’s difficult, but how I used to be really busy, I love it. So now it’s nice to be busy as well, in a little bit different way, because how I mentioned MS, Multiple Sclerosis, my walking is not really good. I am disabled, but instead, on the computer and on the phone, I am constantly and organizing.
Klara: How does it affect your travelling currently?
Kamila? It’s affecting me a lot, because I lost my confidence. To go on bus and travel to town, or walk somewhere alone, because I’m using two sticks. And for a little bit longer distance, I’m using wheelchair. It affects me a lot, so I’m trying to deal with that, but I’m hopefully doing well.
Klara: Yes, absolutely. I think you’re doing very well. Wow. I know you like living a healthy and mindful lifestyle. Have you always lived this way, or did you start living healthier since you were diagnosed with MS?
Kamila: I think I always, my diet was always healthy. And because my father used to be bodybuilder, so I grew up with loads of vitamins and healthy food around. But I was party girl as well, so that combined together wasn’t really great. And after I was diagnosed. I am little bit better, I think, but still in good way. Like healthy diet and more open mind because I appreciate. Even little things, I appreciate more now because I can see it from a different perspective. So, from beginning it was really hard to accept I have MS. But now I can say kind of glad because it made me appreciate more the little things. And I slowed down, I’m better. I’m enjoying more people around which I want and not just bad energy. Yeah, it’s really interesting how something come to your life and change you and your mobility because I was active and now I’m not. I am not active, but I am maybe happier, if it makes sense, what I’m saying?
Klara: Absolutely, it’s interesting and it’s inspiring as well. But I know that it doesn’t stop you from travelling abroad, right?
Kamila: No, no, I’m trying still to travel. It’s a little bit different than before. Take just a backpack and go. You need to plan a little bit deeper, but traveling still, it’s possible and it’s nice, but you need a good partner for travel. But I even travel alone as well. Yeah, with good people.
Klara: Have you travelled alone by plane alone?
Kamila: Not yet. Just with really close friends.
Klara: Would you like to try?
Kamila: Yes, I would like, because to be honest, in airport and around, they are really lovely for disabled people. So, I’m not too scared. If you would ask me, Klari, maybe two years ago, I would say no, no, no, I wouldn’t, but now I’m feeling more confident. Yes.
Klara: What do you do to relax and recharge?
Kamila: Well, if I have my time for myself, I like to listen some nice meditational music and relax, but what I’m doing are NLP hypnosis and Shamanism healing, it’s really helping me for my mind because it’s not easy to deal with this situation. So, yeah, hypnosis, meditation, facial massage, bath with loads of magnesium.
Klara: Yes, to treat yourself. Regarding hypnosis, that’s very interesting. What do you mean by hypnosis? Is it like that traditional type of hypnosis or is it something that I know that there is NLP hypnosis as well which is more like meditation?
Kamila: Yes. So is that second option. I do the NLP hypnosis with is with a lady who guides you. You’re talking about something and then do the NLP hypnosis, which is really interesting and really helpful. I’ve been doing it for more than two years and I love it. I love it because it’s sorting many things in my mind. It’s really helpful.
Klara:I have to say I went through this type of hypnosis as well and it makes you feel great and find some answers for certain things. It’s really good.
Kamila: It’s really good. I would recommend it to everyone who deals with any issue or just to people who want to cheer themselves up. It’s really lovely. It’s also very relaxing, but sometimes can be deep when you go inside to find the answer. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Then you are quite shocked, but it’s nice because in the end you, you find that answer for something which you didn’t understand what’s going on, why something has happened in your, your life, repeated, repeated, repeated, and then you find the answer thanks hypnosis.
Klara: Maybe I can put some links to our show notes for the listeners so they can have a look.
Kamila: Yes, that would be great.
Klara: And regarding your team and your company, maybe the listeners would be interested if you cover only Brighton and Hove area or do you have any other areas that your company covers?
Kamila: Most is Brighton and Hove because it’s easy by bus and travel and around. Yes, but further it is Rottingdean and Shoreham-by-sea. So we expanding a little bit, but the main issue is the drivers because my team, they usually don’t have a driving license, so they travel by bus or by bike. But it looks like we are expanding.
Klara: That’s great. Do you do only private cleanings in private houses?
Kamila: It’s most, yes. We’re doing Airbnb as well. We helped one hotel to clean there and some pubs.
Klara: That’s great to know. So in this case, if anyone would like to either join your team, or anyone would like to hire a cleaner, where they can find about your services.
Kamila: I have a website Kamil Cleaners and most of the clients are recommended which is the best. And if someone would like to join us, they can go to Kami Cleaners website and there is an application form, and they are more than welcome.
Klara: Oh, that’s great. And just out of curiosity, do you also cover any social media or it’s just through your website?
Kamila: Oh, yes, we have Instagram page and on Facebook page as well. So there are some updates. One lady helps me with advertising.
Klara: That’s great. I will put all the links into the show notes. Thank you.
Kamila: Thank you.
Klara: And thank you so much for joining us today. It was very nice to talk to you.
Kamila: It was really a pleasure. Thank you.
Klara: Thank you. And I wish you good luck with all the business and healthy lifestyle and everything.
Kamila: Thank you.
Klara: And before I let you go, I also have a five extra additional questions just for our listeners to get you know, you’re a little bit better.
Kamila: Okay.
Klara: I always ask my guests for these five questions. So, what’s your favourite book?
Kamila: My favourite book is Amara. I really like Amara. I read it twice already. It’s really lovely.
Klara: Thank you so much… Do you have any pets?
Kamila: Yes, I have a cat named Lolo.
Klara: Oh, Lolo. How does he look like?
Kamila: He is a little fluffy white and black cat and he is fine but he’s not really friendly. He can be cheeky. Yes, yes.
Klara: So cute. What’s your favourite colour?
Kamila: It’s a turquoise.
Klara: This is why your logo is white and blue.
Kamila: Exactly. Yes. That’s right.
Klara: And what was the last movie you watched? Last movie? Or it could be TV series.
Kamila: If TV series, that was The English. It’s quite interesting.
Klara: Okay. Thank you for the recommendation. And last question, is there anything you would like to share with our listeners? And I think if there is a message you would like everyone to know. Something.
Kamila: Yes, definitely! Enjoy every day fully with everything.
Klara: That’s a nice one. Thank you so much for joining us today.
Kamila: Thank you. I wish this podcast lots of listeners. Thank you. Bye. Bye.
